“The Davis Boys Project”: Smoke Detector & Fire Safety Education for Families
Date: March 13, 2006
In November of 2005 two brothers Eli and Kael Davis died in a residential house fire in Filer. This was a tragic loss for the family and our community. Shortly afterwards, Headstart approached the Magic Valley Safe Kids Coalition with what is now simply called, “The Davis Boys Project” to memorialize Eli (age 4) and Kael (age 2), and to help prevent the loss of life associated with residential fires.
“The Davis Boys Project” is a community-based effort to increase awareness of the importance of smoke detectors and family fire safety; and to ensure that smoke detectors are available and properly installed in Headstart family homes throughout south central Idaho.
Currently funding to support the purchase of smoke detectors for Headstart families in need is provided through the efforts of Sawtooth Dental and their “Smiles for Life” campaign. From March 1 – June 30, 2006 Sawtooth Dental is offering discounted teeth whitening procedures with half of the proceeds to benefit “The Davis Boys Project” and half contributed to the Garth Brooks Foundation. The Crown Council Dentists donate their time and Discus Dental donates the whitening materials. Call (208) 733-4515 for details about the whitening process and discounted pricing. Appointments are offered in Twin Falls, Shoshone and Hagerman.
With the money raised by Sawtooth Dental, Safe Kids and the Twin Falls LOWE’S store partner to purchase smoke detectors for the project. Community volunteers from Headstart and the local Fire Departments identify families in need, and see that the smoke detectors are delivered and installed correctly in their homes. The volunteers will also promote fire safety education, part of which includes planning a family fire escape route and emergency meeting place so that every family member will know how to get of their home and what to do in case of a fire.
